About the author
The author of this blog is former State Representative Tom McMillin who served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1/1/2009 - 12/31/2014. Tom was the chairman of the House Oversight committee, the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and was temporary chairman of the Education committee. He was regularly tagged as one of the most conservative legislators in Lansing and yet, as mentioned below, was known for working on more libertarian issues with groups like the ACLU.
Tom has been an Oakland County Commissioner, having unseated an incumbent Democrat in 2002, something that hadn't previously been done in Oakland county for decades. He was Mayor of Auburn Hills and served on its City Council for 9 years. Tom also served as President of the Board of Prevail Academy charter school in Mt. Clemens from its inception in 2004 until he started in the legislature in 2009. He has been a Republican precinct delegate since the late 80s, has served as a GOP State Committeeman and was elected as a delegate to the 1996 and 2000 Republican National Conventions. Tom currently serves on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of Crossroads Pregnancy Center in Auburn Hills. Tom ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in 2014.
Tom is a CPA and owns a small CPA firm. He has done consulting work, serving as a part-time CFO for several clients. Tom served as the state field director for the Michigan Christian Coalition in the mid '90s and was a Chief Financial Officer for a property management company.
Some of the awards Tom has received include:
"Taxpayer Hero of the Year" - Michigan Taxpayers Alliance
"Defender of Freedom" - Retake Our Gov
"Sunshine Award" - Michigan Press Association
"Guardian of Small Business" - National Federation of Independent Business
"ACU Conservative" - American Conservative Union
"John the Baptist Award" - American Family Association of Michigan
Tom has been married to Dalila McMillin since 2005. They live in Rochester Hills, with their two daughters, Anna and Leah. Tom's daughter Jessica and her husband Chris live in Lapeer with their daughter, Brooklynne.
Tom's move toward more libertarian views (also see "Tom McMillin: Tea Party conservative, ACLU sympathizer"):
Tom has been known for his leadership among social conservatives since the early 1990s. He led the effort to oust L. Brooks Patterson from the Oakland County Republican party chairmanship at the fall 2002 county convention, due to Patterson's hostility toward social conservatives, particularly the two years prior to that convention, while Brooks was GOP Oakland County Chairman.
Toward the latter part of his first term in the Michigan legislature, Tom started moving toward a more libertarian view on many issues (though not social issues). He championed the statewide indigent defense reforms signed into law in 2013, something that had been attempted for decades without success. He has always been known as a leader in opposing corporate welfare and in his last few years in the legislature, worked closely with the ACLU and liberty groups on exposing the problems of and working to reform areas like civil asset forfeiture, government surveillance and the increasing militarization of law enforcement....and he is believed to be the only Republican in Michigan to receive a campaign contribution from the ACLU's Michigan Legislative Director in 2014.
